Some of the videos needed some more editing, but since they were only ten minutes long, it was never too bad.

John Paul Olsen's tour de force will be remembered as the begining of a long career in the video arts. I did get two cups into the Juried show, and that is a blind jury!! Insert own joke here. We ended up having an international show, thanks to Canada. 13 people, and about 35 cups were on display in old number five. we will even have an online gallery soon.
The reception turned out great, we had about 70 people show up. Just enough to make the space seem full, without too much danger to the cups. We even had some sales, and hope to have some more. We are keeping the gallery hours of an ephemeral gallery, and hope to sell some of my back supply.

Check out www.vulcan5.org for the latest info.

Peace, soon as possible

Show at Gallery 5

"what is a cup"

got listed in Ceramic Monthly!!!

Now to get the word out!!!

and make some dang cups!!

How exciting is this, well, I can't tell you, but I know it's my show!!
or Michelle Gregor's

Send in the Uke

At this months Murmur, I was surprised to see more than one Uke player. The Number of violin players was closer to 10. Multiple accordian players, and that was not even at the 21 grand venue. Which, as predicted was open this month. Had the stage up, and even had some good art on the wall.

My fav this time, was the superheroes dioramas. Very Neopomo. I need to work on the neopomo manifesto.
Anyway, lots of good work, and the energy is still building, even with burning man, and a confusing article in the east bay ex. I thought it muddled, and confusing to the reader who had not been to the murmur, and even more confusing to one who has.

Sabars gallery is still the place to go, if you want the work that will stand the test of time. People were pleasantly surprised at the overall quality of the work, and of course the volume.
As one person stated, "it is like really good art wallpaper."
For those of you that were not there, I would recommend going as soon as possible. 10000 sq. feet, and that doesn't include the 15 foot high ceilings. Each artist recieved 22 by 22 inches. So, like a big wall of sound, one is found looking at a huge wall, and slowly scaling it in the mind. Painting, collage, multimedia, a tv on the floor, someone in your way, text, textile, and now for the downward glance. As is clear, it takes a while for it all to sink in, then comes some discernments.
Juxtapositions: Most of the work had a couple,or more layers of meaning, and often material. T. Booth (See murmur article in this blog)had her smallish painting surrounded by barbed wire, both to claim some of the southwest hertitage she so cleary enjoys, and to keep clear where her 22 inches are bounded. A quarter turn reveals a couple of rusty pans, strung from a couple of lengths of barbed wire. Domestic bliss, or another transplanted Arizonian?
Noelle Nakamana tried to fool this reporter, she has a line drawing of a chair in her shallow bowl. I pointed to a metal hanging chair, and the obvious chairs on the ground, till she said "didn't you see my piece yet?"
Sofa, Murmur, The Vulcan, Limnal, The cannery, and of course CCA were all repersented in force. So was Laney, and Merritt, and many other schools in the Bay area. Amazing.

July Murmur Notes

Well, as usual late again!! this Time I can blame my buddy J.P. and the fact that I went to the Inferno gallery opening as well.

I saw only hay bales, as evidence of the swingin Jumproping.

I saw a lot of beercans.

I saw about twice as many people as usual, because of the article in the Trib, or is this thing about to burst wide open.

We shall see!!

Murmur-rific, in Oak land

Another perfect night for art viewing,\ and I am running late again!!!

the light on the tops of the buildings is fantastic, and the crowd looks good.

I went straight to see Trish Booth's Opening, at the S'ban, as I like to call it.
I met, and talked with the artist, and her paramore- Leonardo. Explorations and Navigation's: The Resonance of Place.
*March 8-11, 2006

Many of our instructors went to this Nceca conference. There were exhibitions, and chances to view new products and techniques. Many opportunities to network with fellow ceramic artists, and with 4500 participants, there was a plethora.
The first day was registration, exhibitions, and gallery tours. It was also the day we commiserated about travel dilemmas. My personal journey was a delay due to snow in Redding, and blown tread in Yreka; once in Oregon it was smooth sailing.
Portland is a major city, and the art galleries and universities were great host to all the ceramic artists. Multiple shuttle routes could whisk one to multiple stops for only Seven Semillons. It was also quite a pleasure to find that the Public Trans had a fare-less zone! One can ride a bus, streetcar, or train in the downtown area, even to the conference for free. Most of the galleries were also accessible.
The opening speaker, Dr. David Suzuki, www.davidsuz.org, was speaking more to the future of the world, and left it up to the audience to find our Place in this new world. The title of his speech gives it all away, "From Naked Ape to Superman." Increasing population, and limited resources only spells disaster. The audience was very moved by his sermon, and the there were some good examples that I am sure will be used in the classroom in the near future.
The next day the conference began in earnest. There were numerous speakers, demo's, videos, and exhibitors to chose from, most at the same time. Some of us focussed on enjoying one thing at a time, I chose to run from one event to the next. I shot video of colleague doing a demo, caught another on saying his catch phrase "contain and deliver", toured the k-12 exhibition; and still had time to get more free posters. To relax, I watched a great video on Viola Frey that had some of our local celebs: Shaw, Gonzalez, and Nagle. It was the best vid of the show.
Due to fatigue, and lack of lunch, I will jump directly to Gary Carlos' opening. "War Faire" was an anti war themed gallery, and there was a packed house. Everyone enjoyed the skill, and seemed to be engaged by the politics. Gary and Richard Notkin had excellent tiles. As regular readers recall, I love video, and to me one of the best pieces of conceptual art was by a cat named Ehren Tool, ehrentool@gmail , who made many cups with the stencil of a military person on them, then he shot the cup, and video shows the loop, and the immediacy of the negative action. He had to experiment to find the rite firing range. For the cups. Hee, Heee. Then he put the remnant cups on a shelf, which speaks volumes to the current attitude towards "our boys in Uniform."
We made the drive home in one long day.

CAN YOU HEAR THAT?

The Oakland Art Murmur, which occurs on the first Friday of the month, was well attended even with massive April showers. The clouds broke around 8pm, and by the time this reporter arrived there were still hundreds of art lovers clogging the sidewalks in the Triangle created by 23rd St., Telegraph, and Broadway.
First stop- Estaban Sabar Gallery, which had a goodly amount of space and excellent HID lighting. Very pro! Kenny Mencher is the featured artist for March, and a large volume of work is there to be viewed. The work is erotic, with no clear preference of subject by the artist. If it is sexy he will paint it.
The rest of the stable of artists is also on view, and next month (May 5, 2006) is featuring Trish Booth and Bethany Ayers. I really was captivated by Ms. Booth’s painting: Acoma Balcony, oil on canvas, 60”x40”. She has clear control of the unique light of Southwest America. What at first blush looks like realism, turns surreal, and then hyperreal. The building draws one in with some exaggerated perspectives, and then one notices the shadows of the roof creating their own illusion, inviting, and pulling one up to the balcony.
Next stop- From the traditional to Ego Park. Where the concept reigns supreme. I am not sure you are allowed to purchase anything at this venue. You could possibly win something. Sara Thacher has control of the space, and she is in the mood to share. One could share one’s shoes, but most people thought that was too much, and someone was overheard to ask where the Lysol was. Previous to the night, she had handed out pillows to weary BART travelers, using a new pillowcase each time. At the end of the Bart Ride, she would fill out and affix a card with the persons name, and destination. She shared the activity of her house, using a shareware program hooked up to a webcam. The motion was framed, hence the human, and occasional cat, by a thin white line box created by the computer, which lent it a very NeoPoMo feeling.
This is Oakland, and what held the viewers interest the most was an exciting game of Rochambeau, a.k.a. Rock, Paper, Scissors. The artist claimed it was not a tie-in to the nearby venue. She had pinned to the wall some cut out paper forms, some scissors, and you guessed it, some rocks on a shelf. There were other prizes, and the deal was one would wager something of equal value for one of her items. Her favorite expression this evening was, “if we reversed the trade, would you think it was fair?” This reporter wagered a pin of equal size, and when informed that it was handmade she tried to put more items on her side.

Another contestant had a 95 cent BART card. She wanted to play for a dollar. When asked the above question, she thought about it, and dug a nickel out of her pocket. The viewer won, and as a matter of record, while there, most people won. This did not seem to trouble Ms. Thacher. She claimed to not have a clear strategy, and “was not sure there is one.”
The Oakland Art Murmur brings people to a vibrant art scene, and the few hundred people attending this month seemed to enjoy it. Sadly, 33 Grand Gallery is now defunct, but the owner is looking for a new home. The growing pains for this downtown scene are present, but with our support, the Oakland Art scene will continue to thrive.

Open Studios

Open Studios, first and second weekends of June.
Painting, Sculpture, and Ceramics will be offered at low, low prices.

Some video may be presented.

Hope to see you there!!!!

Fire the Alpine

Fired old number 2, to cone 6.
